During the past ten years, and in addition to their regular gigs, the Gregg Gelb Swing Band has received numerous grants and has recorded four CDs along with one WUNC-TV special with the North Carolina Symphony.  Gelb also is a recipient of the 1997-98 North Carolina Jazz Composers Fellowship Award. Gregg and the band recently recorded 14 new arrangements of classic swing-era tunes that provide the soundtrack for the documentary film "WAR ZONE", which recounts the surprising story of German U-Boats that patrolled off the North Carolina coast during WW II. The German submariners were big fans of American swing, while at the same time wreaking havoc on Allied maritime shipping. The new CD with this music is called Let's Face The Music and Dance.

The Swing Band has been playing concerts and other events throughout North Carolina since 1989. We continue to be a popular choice for dances and weddings. We are also very experienced at and thoroughly enjoy doing master classes, workshops with school jazz ensembles and performances for schools.  Many of our players teach at universities throughout North Carolina and are committed music educators in addition to their busy performance schedules.

Some recent and upcoming performance highlights include:

  • Duke University Institute of the Arts - The Director of the Institute asked Gelb to prepare a Latin Jazz Program.
  • North Carolina Museum of Art - From 1993 - June 2003, coordinators of concerts and education often asked Gelb to arrange music that coincided with the Art MuseumÕs exhibits for the annual Father's Day concert.
  • Triangle Swing Dance Society, Durham (regular dance concerts since 1989)
  • Craven Community Concerts Association, New Bern - The Presenter and Gelb worked on the program together, to program works to suit the taste of the audience.
  • Daniels Middle School, Raleigh - Concerts for the entire school and workshop with the student jazz ensemble.
  • Riverwood Elementary, Clayton - Music Teacher wanted Gelb's program to coincide with schools study of Jazz.
  • numerous wedding receptions and parties at Carolina Inn, Chapel Hill; Fearrington House, Chatham County; UNC Alumni Club; Longview House, Raleigh; Washington Duke, Durham; and other hotels, convention centers and homes throughout North Carolina, Virginia and South Carolina.
